International expert consensus statement focusing on pre- and post-hair transplant care.
Summary
Objective: To reach an international consensus among experts and provide recommendations on best practices in hair transplant surgery, focusing on pre- and post-transplant care.
Methods: A modified Delphi method was used to reach consensus. An international scientific committee developed a questionnaire containing 81 statements. A panel of 38 hair transplant experts from 17 countries across 4 continents evaluated the questionnaire.
Results: Two rounds of consensus were held, with 59 of the 81 statements (73%) reaching consensus. The experts' recommendations emphasize the proper selection of hair transplant candidates and the need for patients to have received adequate medical treatment for alopecia prior to transplantation. Comorbidities should be assessed and considered during surgical planning, and an individualized perioperative care plan should be developed before the procedure. Certain medications associated with a higher risk of bleeding should be discontinued before surgery. Specific recommendations for post-transplant care are also provided. After transplantation, patients should gradually resume their normal hair care routine. Close follow-up should be conducted during the first year after transplantation.
Conclusions: This study presents several consensus-based recommendations on general aspects of hair transplantation, including candidate selection, pre-transplant medical therapy, anesthesia, and resumption of hair care after the procedure.
